The designers: They are young, eco, full of imagination and they are creative New Yorkers
March 2013
In a large industrial space in Red Hook, Brooklyn, Jason Horvath and Bill Hilgendorf practice interior design and manufacture strictly handmade furnishings that combine an avant-garde sensibility withsustainability. Their work is based on a extensive recovery of recycled material, and deprived of their original function, give it new life: currently they are working with some “relics” of Hurricane Sandy. Both graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design, in 2004 they founded Uhuru, which means freedom in Swahili, and some of their pieces are part of the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum and the Smithsonian Institute.
