Sonoma Estate

Private estate, 2010

In the brilliant sun of California’s Sonoma Valley sit two of UHURU’s most iconic pieces, the Cyclone Lounger from reclaimed Coney Island Boardwalk and the Bilge Chair from bourbon barrels and firetruck springs. While the Cyclones repose on the pool deck the Bilge Chairs look out over miles of vineyards; the durability of each design on display in the heart of wine country. The Sonoma Project speaks to the character of these reclaimed materials and illustrates UHURU’s core philosophy; leaf springs from New York City firetrucks that would otherwise be smelted in a Brooklyn scrap yard cradle reclaimed oak from Kentucky bourbon barrels, the design proving the aesthetic viability of upcycling and that beauty lies in utlity as well as material history.
