Standard Chair is a composition of found chair backs, steel plate, and expanded aluminum.
The hand-carved chair backs (which include legs) are new, left unfinished by a local manufacturing company that recently went out of business.  To the ornate Louis the XVI backs, Uhuru has attached a seat and front legs plasma cut and bent from plate steel; the understated detail along the clean, angular seat subtly echoes the heavy ornamentation of the original chairs.  Instead of the overstuffed upholstery the original manufacturer likely had in mind, the oval back is made from aluminum mesh. The Standard Chair was recently added to the Brooklyn Museum of Art's permanent collection.
