A Favorite since 2004, this Uhuru classic is made from upcycled utility poles and hand made in small batches at our Pennsylvania factory. Discover the story and process behind the Hono Stool.

from beam to hono

We start by chainsawing blanks out of pilings pulled from the utility pole fabrication process, which is supplied from a local mill. Then, the blanks are prepped through a series of sanding and flattening. A pie-shaped “check” detail is cut into each stool, which helps alleviate the pressure of wood as it expands and contracts with changes in temperature and humidity.

RENEWING AN ANCIENT METHOD

Each Hono is charred utilizing an ancient Japanese method of wood preservation called Shou Sugi Ban. Inspired by the method's resulting rich color depth, authentic texture, and it's traditional use to weather-proof wood, we adapted the application to be environmentally safe and durable.
